Dr. Duong Tuan Hung

Dr. Duong Tuan Hung obtained his BA in Chemistry at Hanoi University of Science in 2004 and was awarded the Vietnam Education Foundation (VEF) fellowship for his PhD program in Chemistry at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, USA. In 2009, he returned to Vietnam and started as a researcher at the Institute of Chemistry, Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology. He was vice principal investigator of two national level research projects, one of one was awarded as “Ten Best Scientific and Technological Achievements in Vietnam in 2014” and one patent issued by the National Office of Intellectual Property of Vietnam. In September 2015, he was selected as one of 70 young most talented scientists of Vietnam to meet Prime Minister and Minister of Ministry of Science and Technology. Dr. Hung effortlessly served as a coach and trainer for Vietnam national teams competing at Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, the most privileged STEM competition for pre-college students in the world, which helped Vietnam win multiple prizes, including notably the first prize in 2012, two fourth prizes in 2014, one third prize in 2016 and one fourth prize in 2017. He also was an active member of Vietnam STEM Alliance educating and training thousands of high school teachers and students. He acted as a jury of the ASEAN+3 Plus Three Junior Science Odyssey with the theme “Renewable Energy for Life” in Hanoi, Vietnam in July 2017.

Abstract

New advances in science and technology have tremendously reshaped the world and in turn, have been posing many demands for the education and training. STEM and its relevant method will play an important role to equip young people and students with essential knowledge and skills to be ready but it can be ineffective without the intelligent and brave leadership. For this session, an insightful definition of leadership will be discussed. Participants will be guided to reflect their inside interests and identify how to use soft skills and adaptive leadership to take actions. Role models study will be chosen for the best illustration. The personal case study will also be shown which can give an impression of how to get involved. Useful strategies will be presented to integrate those leadership skills with powerful scientific and technological knowledge in order to inspire young people to actively transform the STEM fields in their own country. Participants will interact with each other during the session to brainstorm and make a presentation at the end.
